If you're planning on teaching English overseas or just travelling, emergency medical insurance is a smart thing to get.

Even if medical insurance is covered by your contract,
CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING:

it does not start immediately
it is only local coverage
coverage may not be complete
what if you need to come home
what if you're ill and you need a family member to come to the country you're in

Do not rely on your current health plan whether government or private to cover the costs if you get sick or injured while you are abroad. At best, your health plan will cover only a portion of the bill.

Things to Consider with Travel Health Insurance

Travel health insurance, is designed to financially protect you if you have experienced an unexpected sickness or injury. If you have become injured or if you feel unhealthy in some way, seeking medical consultation and/or treatment, should be covered expenses under any travel health insurance policy.

Depending on your country of residence/ and or citizenship, different policy options are available to you.

Other policy features to consider when purchasing a policy may include (but are not limited to):

Is the policy ‘Emergency Based Only?’
Would you want a policy that offers ongoing treatment after the initial ‘emergency’ phase is over? If so, consider an ‘expatriate’ policy.
Does the policy provide for outpatient prescription medication?
Are any regular non-emergency visits covered…is this important to you?
What is the policy deductible? (The portion you as a policyholder must pay first, before the policy covers any further eligible expenses).
Is there a plan co-insurance clause? Must you pay for example, 20% of all costs?
Can the policy be extended – and if so, for how long, and what is the process?
Will you be declaring non-residency to save $$$ in taxes? (If so, consider possibly an ‘expatriate’ policy).
Is any ‘Return to Home Country’ coverage provided after you return home or if you come back for a brief holiday?

Why Do I Need Emergency Medical Insurance?

If your contract already includes medical insurance, that coverage often does not start until you register and get your "residency" status in the country you are teaching. In most countries this takes 1-2 months after you arrive.

It is important to have some sort of medical coverage or travel insurance while your residency is being processed.

Even after your residency is established and the local medical insurance starts, it is also important to have Emergency Medical Insurance in case there is a serious problem and you need extended medical attention. This medical coverage will get your relocated, by whatever means necessary, to the closest center that can provide you with the treatment you need.

I already have coverage that I am going to keep when I go abroad.

If you already have a local government or private plan GREAT! Keep it if you can! It is REALLY important to not completely rely on your current health plan whether government or private to cover the costs if you get sick or injured while you are abroad. At best, your health plan will cover only a portion of the bill.

It is your responsibility to obtain and understand the terms of your medical coverage.

Some credit cards offer health and travel insurance but only for certain periods and do not assume that the card along will provide adequate coverage.
